The History of La Liga
The First Division of Professional Soccer League in Spain, better known as La Liga, is sponsored by Santander Bank. Also known as the Star League, it is played by twenty clubs under the running point dispute system, where clubs play each other in the turn and return system, home and away games. Like each team play against each other two times per year.
According to the annual ranking of the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHF), La Liga is the best football league in the world, also considered to be the second strongest league of the last decade in Europe being surpassed only by the English league (Premier League). However the League shows low competitiveness.
The duo Real Madrid and Barcelona hold the vast majority of titles, 59 in total. Of the last 10 editions 9 were won by them, and in 7 Real and Barcelona took turns as champion and vice. In the last 20, 16 have been defeated by the pair, making it the league with the least competitive championship of the five most important in Europe (England, Italy, France, Germany and Spain).
Atletico de Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Valencia make up a second group of Spain's most winning teams, see rankings of titles and points won, with these clubs holding a total of 24 titles.
A third group is Real Sociedad, with 2 titles, La Coruña, Sevilla and Real Betis, with 1 title each, with 9 being the number of Spanish champions.
An analysis of the ranking of vice champions does not show very different result, as Real Madrid and Barcelona add 48 vices, against 23 of the second group (Atlético, Athletic and Valencia), 12 of three teams that complete the relationship of champions (Real Sociedad, La Coruña and Sevilla), against a single runner-up of five other clubs that were never champions (Real Sporting de Gijón, Real Santander, Real Zaragoza, UD Las Palmas and Villarreal).
The runners-up at the end of the championship are Spanish champions, and together with the second, third and fourth qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Clubs that finish in fifth and sixth place qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The last three are demoted to the Second Division.
Only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao have never been relegated to the Second Division.
The three biggest winners of the championship - Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid - are also the only teams in Spain world champions or intercontinental.
Madrid (43) and Barcelona (26) are the cities that concentrate the most titles.
Also, La Liga is known for The Ace League, Barcelona and Real Madrid were and are the teams for the some of the best players in the world. Legends as David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Casillas and among others already have played in La Liga for two of considered the best teams in the world.
